So what exactly is the definition of Internet marketing? I mean, we’ve all heard of marketing online, but what makes it so special?

The Internet marketing definition is “the marketing of products or services over the Internet.” It’s also referred to as i-marketing, web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing. (wikipedia.org)

The true beauty of Internet marketing is when you start to break it down into different categories though. The major ones are:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Pay Per Click (PPC)

Social Media Marketing

And there are several lesser known categories that people in certain niches are familiar with like affiliate marketing, video marketing, and content marketing.

Each of these methods are a bit different in terms of cost and what kind of traffic they can get you – but all are effective in their own right!

What I want to do is talk a bit about the major three and show you how they can be used!

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization is the strategic process of optimizing a website so that it ranks higher in the search engines naturally or organically.

With over 68% of the world using Google on a daily basis for their search results, you can imagine the kind of FREE traffic you can get if you rank high for certain keywords, including three and four word keyword phrases!

Once your site is ranked high in Google, you’ll seriously get all the traffic you need to grow your business. The best part? It’s free!

The downside, getting ranked in the search engines takes a bit of work and time. You have to know how to find keywords that aren’t too competitive. Then, you have to know where to put those keywords in your website. And then you need to get other websites to link to you! It’s quite a process.

Don’t worry, though. We’ve got you covered. We’ll show you how to do all that.

Pay Per Click

Second up in our Internet marketing definition is Pay per click (PPC). PPC marketing is designed for one thing and one thing only – getting targeted traffic through paid placement in the search engines. The thinking behind pay per click is simple – your ad is shown each and every time someone searches for a specific phrase in a search engine. And you only pay when your ad is clicked!

The biggest player in PPC is Google. With Google Adwords, you can determine which keyword phrase determines which ad and also where a visitor goes once the ad is clicked!

Now, each of those clicks has a certain bid price associated with it. Say 50 cents. If the person who clicked your ad spends MORE THAN 50 cents with you – you just made a profit.

But with bid prices, it’s easier for a competitor to outbid you on certain keywords. That’s the downside. In fact, a common practice is to enter a market and send the bid prices really, really high – discouraging your competitors from using PPC altogether!

There are a lot of things which determine how much success you have with Pay Per Click. Some of them are:

Ad copy (or what your PPC ad actually says)

Landing page quality

Adwords Quality Score

Targeted Keywords

and other things…

But you get the idea. The Traffick’d training program will teach you how to do all of it!

Social Media Marketing

Social Media Marketing is the darling of the bunch right now. Everyone is trying to figure out how to use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others to market their businesses online.

Want to know a little secret?! It’s not hard!

All you have to do is build up a list of followers and friends and employ a little bit of social media magic – and you get results.

With social media, there are ways to get targeted followers and friends, and then it’s just a numbers game!

It’s easy to track how many people click your links… It’s easy to get targeted followers… All that’s left is getting those followers to convert to paying customers!

Summary

My advice to you is to take bite size chunks of the pieces of the Internet marketing definition, SEO, PPC and social media – and learn about them a bit each week. It’s easy to get sucked in quick because there is always something new to learn and implement!

I can remember back in 2001 when pay per click banner advertising was all anyone was talking about. No matter which way you turned, there was someone talking about the incredible results they were getting from banner ads.

Fast-forward to today, banner advertising has dropped severely out-of-favor. No one talks about it, no one teaches on it, but yet it is still one of the most important and effective forms of Internet marketing on the planet.

And lucky you – you’ll be one of the few using it!

There are several reasons for the fall of the banner ad. First and foremost, the prevalence of blogs and new media sites makes banner inventory easy to get and it’s cheaper than some of the other alternative forms of Internet advertising.

Secondly, flash developers started creating these god-awful .gif rotating banners that were a terrible eyesore. Bright greens and ugly yellows were common among a lot of established sites.

So what about the resurgence? Why should I be looking at banner advertising as a realistic for of Internet marketing?

Now, there are tools such as Google’s managed placements and buysellads.com that make purchasing banner spots relatively painless. Not only can you get detailed traffic statistics of the site you’re looking to advertise on, but they also have incredible tracking capabilities that lets you see what kind of click through rates you’re getting.

In terms of pricing, back in 2001, people were paying as much as $150 and $200 for 1000 impressions (CPM). These days, you can get pay per click banner advertising for as low as $.20 a click.

Google’s Adwords platform makes setting up pay per click campaigns ridiculously easy. All you have to do is determine which keywords you want to rank for, create the banner ad itself, and set up a squeeze page or a landing page and you’re all set!

If you are not the most graphically savvy person in the world, you can find any number of freelance graphic designers or banner ad creators on the Internet using sites like freelanceswitch.com and rentacoder.com.

As far as setting up the pay per click program itself, it’s relatively painless to do. Go to adwords.google.com, fill-in your registration information, and set up your first campaign.

After that, when it asks you to create and ad, make sure you click the ‘image ad’ option. That’s it! Just make sure you track your results to figure out what you’re spending in comparison to how much you’re making in revenue.

Of course, there are a lot of things you need to consider in setting up a pay per click advertising campaign. Some of these are what keywords you need to target and what kind of prospects those keywords are bringing in. You don’t want ‘tire-kickers’ (as my good friend Jimmy Vee says!) eating up your ad budget every time they click through your PPC ad. Instead, you want good solid certified prospects that will buy your stuff!

A lot of times a quick way to weed out tire-kickers is to have a multiple-word keyword phrase such as ‘Internet marketing strategy’. Having two or three words inside a keyword phrase seems to do wonders for the level of traffic that you’ll be getting to your site.

The bottom line is you don’t want to waste money on people that have no interest in buying your product or signing up for your newsletter. You want good, qualified potential clients coming to your website from your pay per click banner advertising campaigns.

For more pay per click training, make sure you sign up for our free Internet marketing secrets video in the upper right-hand sidebar. there’s lots of free training videos that’ll get you up to speed fast!

It’s slim and quick and sexy when it’s running. When it’s down, it seems the whole world runs a bit slower!

For those of you who haven’t had a look at twitter.com, check it out now.

[This is going to be a long one. I apologize. I've published it here in case you need to refer to it later...]

You Have 140 Characters…

The basic premise is that you have 140 characters to do what you want. You can send a message about your day, what you’re doing, what you’re working on, or whatever else catches your fancy.

You can follow people and people can follow you. For example, if you want to keep up with what I’m doing throughout the day – follow me @jasondrohn. I’ll make sure to add you to the people I follow as well!

Following people is how the game gets played. It lets you participate with the community, which is a must for any social networking.

5 Tips To Electrify Your Twitter Marketing

Twitter as a community is unlike anything I’ve seen on the web. It’s not quite as sticky as Facebook or some of the other social networks. It is very powerful in it’s own right, though.

You’re not going to be able to develop full blown relationships in Twitter alone, either with a single person or a particular segment. What Twitter is very good at is raising awareness of your brand.

Tip #1 – Build Your Network

Unless you are an Internet celebrity, your personality is going to get lost in the noise. You have to start out by following people.

This might be people in a local area or those you see on podcasts. A lot of bloggers are using their Twitter ID’s like they use email, so it’s pretty easy to find people to follow.

One of the things I did at first was to go into some celebrity’s follower page and follow the people that were following him. My target was Darren from Problogger.

A lot of the people you follow will follow you back pretty quickly. So building a little clan isn’t as hard as it seems.

Tip #2 – Participate

Make sure you are participating in the conversation. Don’t just continuously spew forth all your promotional messages. If people don’t get to know you, they will disregard all your links and your messages. They’re probably cap that off by pressing the dreaded ‘unfollow’ button!

Grab a Twitter utility like TweetDeck (my favorite as of right now) or Twhirl and start getting involved.

You’re first couple tweets will be akward, much like your first blog posts. Have a look at how other people are using Twitter and run with that.

Tip #3 – Promote In Moderation

Everyone hates spam email. It takes forever to delete. It’s vulgar and takes time away from other more precious tasks.

Twitter spamming is similar.

I follow close to 1400 people. I get more news faster than through any other medium on the planet. The last thing I want to see is someone incessantly spamming the Twitter-sphere with links to their own stuff!

It gets old really quick.

The best way to structure your Tweets is a bit like business blogging. Talk about your brand and your business for about 50% of the time. Engage in conversation about 25% of the time. Talk about your personal life for the remaining 25%.

That way people can see you for what you are. They are also more inclined to find out more about you (clicking the links you give them!)

It’s not about ‘take, take, take.’ It’s about joining the conversation.

Tip #4 – Monitor Your Brand

Lately, there have been a lot of talks about Facebook or Google picking up Twitter. Both are looking at the service for different reasons, but the one I find most fascinating is Google’s.

Google wants to archive the data in a real-time fashion. In order to do that most effectively, they need to tear apart the engine that makes Twitter tick.

There are services already built such as TweetLater.com which allows you to define a keyword that you want monitored. If that keyword pops up, you get alerted by email!

Personally, I have all my sites tracked, as well as my name. So if someone talks about me or MarketingHackz or Traffickd, I can almost instantly reply to that person thanking them for helping me promote stuff.

This works equally well for businesses. In fact, one of my clients is a college in the area. I have been helping them put a Twitter/Social Media strategy in place and they get alerted every time the college name is ‘tweeted.’

This helps them put out fires and give props where it’s needed!

Tip #5 – Take Your New Buddies With You

In my opinion, one of the most powerful parts of the Twitter interface is the direct message. With direct messaging, you can directly interact with anyone that you follow. If you send them a DM, it usually gets sent to their email inbox which helps to move interaction away from the Twitter interface.

If you find a business partner or a client on Twitter, you’re going to want to take them out of the interface to continue interacting with them. Send them an email. Say hi. Twitter is great for introductions, but not so good at detailed communication!

BONUS Tip #6 - Be Different

I can’t take credit for this, but I like it. The college I was working with, Mercyhurst, has started doing all their Twitter messages in first person. For example, if someone is coming to do a presentation, like Oprah, Mercyhurst’s tweet would be:

And tonight, I’m pleased to announce a special presentation by Oprah Winfrey!

It’s simple. It’s elegant. It’s a bit different.

The point is to join the conversation but stand out from the crowd. Develop a personality in 140 characters and your business could reach a height you haven’t yet seen!

Enjoy the road,

Well, this weekend was a bit atypical… And with it, I’m going to tell a bit of a story.

In about April, Tech Solution started moving into the content side of the world by offering what is now known as “The Hackz Network.” What we do on this group of sites is simple – we discuss productivity and better ways of doing things in a number of areas. To date, we have:

NetHackz.com

MarketingHackz.com

PCHackz.com

(soon to be launched) GreenHackz.com

and a couple other ones…

The reason we launched all these sites is really two-fold; advertising income and test-beds for Internet marketing. And with that, I brought on a brilliant social media marketing guy named Ritu. The man is a genius when it comes to marketing through Facebook, Stumbleupon and Digg. (He is also the one who put together our social media training in the member’s section of Traffick’d!)

When NetHackz was launched, it went on the front page of Digg on opening day – bringing in 51,000 unique visitors. One week later, NetHackz made its second front page apperance with another 41,000 visitors coming in. Two weeks after that, the site managed its third appearance – bringing the grand total of Digg traffic to 132,000 uniques in the first month of being up and running.

Funny thing is – when Digg sees that much traffic going to one place – they get suspicious. And they banned NetHackz.com. NH can no longer be on the front page of Digg.

Well, our social media marketing master had a solution for that! How does it go? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em?!

Over the weekend, we saw that we were getting a substantial amount of traffic from BBC World News. (I know, I am still reeling in delight from having a site that was mentioned on BBC!!) After a couple quick calls between Ritu and I, we found that they wrote about us here.

Now, I’ll give you a minute to put 2 and 2 together…

NetHackz is banned on Digg.com

NetHackz was written about on BBC.

What did Ritu do? Send the article on BBC to the front page of Digg – resulting in 8000 unique visitors through one of the world’s most reputable brands!

In essence, this is WAY better than just hitting the front page of Digg by itself. Because the article on BBC was referring to NetHackz it gave it instant credibility which means that our RSS subscriber count is bound to go up by 200%-300%.

So, my question to you is – “What could you do with all the traffic?”

Could you fill up your pipeline a bit better? Generate some leads that you couldn’t have gotten otherwise?

With social media, the answer is all of the above. You just have to learn how to get your sites there…

For the complete social media marketing course, get signed up today! And remember, the guy who is responsible for all the traffic you just read about is the one who designed the courses we are offering through Traffick’d!

Below you will find 10 simple tips and tricks of the PPC industry. It’s nothing too advanced, but you do need to be aware of them in planning and managing your pay per click campaigns! They’ll save you both time AND money!

First step – use all the keywords that are justifiable for your product or target market. Keep your bids low to see what terms are searched the most.

Take mispellings and domain names into account. Also include your product names.

MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE A CALL TO ACTION IN YOUR ADS.

Once you’re familiar with ad placement and keywords, split the lists up into individual campaigns.

Do some research on dynamic keyword insertion. This will put the keyword that the user searched for in your ad automatically.

Don’t waste your money trying to be in the top position! Positions 2 thru 4 work just fine.

Make sure you apply the right metrics to account for the end result. In essence, if you are trying to sell something, make sure the PPC program is tracking it.

Start with a low budget and increase as you refine.

If you only offer a product to a local area, don’t market to the whole world.

Make sure to check out the tutorials the PPC company provides. They will help with conversion.

Branding isn’t something we teach here at Traffick’d, but it is very important to realize that in order to market well online – you have to integrate your brand into the mix! If you forget your brand, it will be a much more difficult journey to the top because no one will be able to link your offline existence with your online existence!

Companies like Apple, Reebok, Nike, Mc Donalds and Dominos all stand at a point in their product life cycle where just their logo can do the talking. It’s the magic of branding. The next time you come across your favorite shoe company’s ad on the streets, remember to study it. The reason is because it will help you gain an insight into the world of branding. It remains to be one of the biggest and most important aspects of any business.

So how does one define a brand at all? Defining a brand can be a time consuming activity. It requires you to successfully answer the following questions:

What is the mission of your company? Define where and what your company is looking at?

What benefits and qualities of the product/service is being offered?

What image or perception do the prospective consumers already hold of your company?

With what do you want them to be associated with your company?

The answers to these questions will put you in a better position as far as defining a brand is concerned. Don’t trust outside information, do your research and take your time. It is extremely important that you know what the consumers think of you.

It should be clear how important the branding can be for a business. This includes knowing who, what, when and where you want to communicate or deliver your brand messages. So a brand must circle around the consumers right? Right!

Branding includes two elements – external and internal to the consumer.

Internal brand elements include the following:

Personality: This relates to the consumer’s description of the brand.

Culture: The social context within which

the brand is perceived.

Self-Image: What you feel as a company, what

the brand says?

External elements include the following:

Physical Characteristics: What

the brand has to say physically?

Reflection: Relates to the targeted audience or consumers

Relationship: The consumer’s ability to connect with

the product and identifying the relationship with the brands.

A great example of a successful brand could be Intel. The company has used all the elements that are required build a strong brand and has effectively achieved it as well. The micro-chip manufacturing giant has been able to sustain their image and is now counted amongst the top ten brands of

the world. The following content will explain what all YOU can do to become the next hot brand:

Creating a logo: One of the most important aspects of branding is to have a great logo. Once you have one, place it everywhere! Don’t restrict your ideas, feel free to post them wherever you can.

Pen down the “brand messages”: It is extremely important that your employees share the same image as you. Make sure that everyone knows what messages are to be conveyed through

the brand image.

Create a brand reflecting voice: Is your brand friendly? Be conversational. The voice should reflect all the elements of your brand including visual imagery.

Come up with a tagline: Have a tagline which encapsulates the whole experience your brand creates. Something that has a meaning, is clear and remains in the memory. Tagline can help consumers relate easily.

Be consistent: Without consistency, all of the above points and tips are useless. Drive for consistency, don’t be too fancy!

These were some tips on how you can start creating an image in consumers minds about your brand. Your brand is you promise to your customer, hence, it becomes extremely vital that you stick to it and be truthful. Once you connect with your targeted audience, you have one piece of the pie in your hand. For the rest of it, just be truthful, deliver your promises on time. Nowadays, co-branding has become extremely popular. You might have come across 2 brand names on the same product. This technique can also be very helpful when it comes to creating a brand name.

Once you have a brand, there are a million other things you can do for further promotion. Get into retail and merchandising. Print shirts with your logos, mugs/coasters, caps, etc. These may cost very little but then it becomes a foolproof method of free advertising. So don’t hurry, take your time and hire a professional if required because the road after that becomes only a little easier. Feel free to comment and suggest any thoughts you might have.

There is pretty big section in our courses called, “Internet Marketing Expanded.” IME is where the gray-area marekting methods are explained in full – this one being one of them. We call it the Beta phenomenon.

The Beta Phenomenon

Being beta is a bit like being a very expensive wine bar – everyone wants in but no one wants to pay. The people that get in are enough to generate a huge buzz, and then the business is golden…

Websites aren’t any different.

You’ve probably seen them on TechCrunch, Mashable or a host of other startup-reviewing
blogs. “We have 500 invites for the private beta (get ‘em while they last)!”

Most who have been around these blogs see this and have become aware that usually, even if you are too late to get an invite, you can request one and get it within a day from the site itself. In theory, with so many of these out there, they shouldn’t work.

Yet, they do. Here’s why:

“It’s private. It’s beta. Your friends will envy you.”

Those who are active on Twitter have seen the desperate cry for help…

“I need an invite to (nextgreatstartup.com) and they’re out. Does anyone have one?”

We want to help our friends. Sometimes we want our friends to be jealous of us, too. A little invitation-envy never killed a relationship.

Early Adopter Status

There are those who have an eye for what will be big and what won’t be. They can see “The Next Big Thing” from a gigabyte down the road. For the other 99.9% of us who either:

A) Thought MySpace was a fad that would flop by 2006

B) Thought Cuil was really a Google Killer

C) Trusted AOL when they bought, well, anybody

D) All of the Above

…well, let’s just say that we have our instincts. With some websites exploding on the scene, it is important to users that they achieve “early adopter” status. It’s a bragging right of immense recognition into what is hot. It’s a feeling of power to be an expert on a site before the floodgates open. Most would like to start on the ground floor while the upper floors are being built.

“OMG if I miss this I’ll die!”

Most people know that it isn’t hard to get an invite if you miss the initial blast.

Most.

Some people still think that if they miss
the private beta, they won’t be able to get in anytime soon. Even worse, sometimes
the private betas with limited invites are truly private betas with limited invites. Once they’re gone, wannabe users really do have to wait.

That sucks. Trust me.

Potential, potential, potential!

The number one reason, after everything else, is that some startups just look like they will be really cool. Some fill a gap that we’ve wanted filled. Some fill a gap that we didn’t know existed until someone came up with a startup that filled that hole.

Regardless of what drives people to click on
the private invite button and type in the magic code, they simply work. They are an effective way to get a base of users to truly beta test a product. They are also effective in giving a boost of real users even if real beta testing has been completed.

Just as we hear “the next 17 callers will receive…” on the radio or “place your order in the next 10 minutes and we’ll send you…” on the television, we will always see “Hurry, only 500 Beta Invites available!” from now until the end of the Internet.

Pay per click can be an amazing form of advertising, provided you manage your campaigns wisely!

Primarily working on the conventional techniques of search engine optimization, a campaign can do wonders for your business if you design it cleverly. A set of some specific keywords is sufficient to get your ad loaded on the search pages of any search engine – but that’s only the start of it!

Here are ten effective tips which will get you off to a good start:

Define PPC – Your first priority is to define your goal, plan and strategy in order to form a basic layout for a PPC campaign. This will help you to get a better idea as to what your campaign lacks and what your campaign is overburdened with. So define and design a set of metrics which will guide you throughout the campaign with the help of proper analysis.

Information and Data – Once you are done defining plans and strategies, you can opt for the second step of gathering information and data relevant to your business needs. This will help you design better pay per click campaigns in order to achieve your goal. Collection of information or data will assist you in determining the keywords required to make your venture profitable, target your audience and the right usage of those keywords with time and audience management requirements.

Keyword Usage and Tracking – This operation involves an advanced level of management. Management in the sense that you need to use keywords in such a minimal amount that your business gets its audience with very low expense. Right usage with right tracking will prove to be really fruitful for your pay per click campaign. You can also get a custom design for your keywords and a third party keyword tracking system, if you desire. This can act as an accessory for your basic campaigning needs and business necessities and growth.

Count on Bids – The idea behind any campaign is solely dependent on its bidding system. This bidding is based on a web interface which helps you generate traffic to your website or business. So get the right keywords and get better traffic with a keyword level tracking bid system.

Page Selection – If you are satisfied with your keyword usage and keyword tracking, then go for a page selection from where you would like your business to be propelled. This page will be your landing page. It is not necessary that your home page could be the landing page. The best tracked page which can make your PPC campaign effective must be your landing page.

PPC Management tools – You can use various inexpensive PPC management tools like bidvertiser, chitika or Google Adwords. They will understand your requirements and help you in making your pay per click campaign profitable in all respects.

Target Audience – Although it’s the first priority for any business need, it often gets bogged down in planning and executing business campaigns. A PPC campaign is no different. But at the right time you can make the decision of selecting your target audience helping your business to grow. You can do it by trial and error method by either selecting a local or an international zone.

Focused Factor – Make sure you have got easy landing pages for your campaign with easy navigation. It should have enough information that a user needs in order to fulfill their necessities. Avoid multiple folds and buttons since this will hamper the quality of the page.

Focused Factor 2 – Avoid too many flashy pages or bright colors. This can make your campaign the worst possible medium for you, since the user will have no other option but to leave the site. This is an important point of consideration since many people go for it assuming that it would bring traffic to their sites.

Daily Management – Make sure to manage your campaigns on a daily basis. Don’t think that they will be fine one their own because they won’t! Take an interest in how they are performing and optimize the campaign to fit your needs even better.

Questions are great mediums on Twitter. Post a question and include a link to your blog. For example. If you’re a graphic designer, you can ask the question, “Do you know how you can use vector art to make stickers?” Follow the question with a link to your blog and then track the traffic to your blog post!

Using Comments As Blog Fuel

Another creative way to drive traffic to your blog is to write a twitter post using some of the more interesting or unique comments to blog posts you’ve written. You might also share some experiences from meetings or telephone conversations. These can start very interesting conversations and drive traffic to your company website.

Announce Contests and Events

Announcing contests and events using Twitter is easy… Make sure you post a link to your website where the contest details are offered or post a question and challenge someone to be the first response. Give them something related to your business for answering the question correctly first.

Share Personal Adventures

This is difficult for a lot of people to grasp – personality wins in social media. If you don’t show personality, you will lose a very sad battle. If you’re having a company picnic, share a picture or post a funny or thought provoking quote the CEO just made during a speech. Anything that helps build your brand, company philosophy, and marketing strategy is worthy of posting.

Tweet Anything Thought Provoking

Post interesting or thought provoking statistics, quotes, or headlines and start a conversation. During the conversation, when appropriate, it may be possible to link to your company website.

Make An Announcement Or Do A Press Release

Do you have a new wonderful product or service to share with the world? Use twitter to make an announcement – amplify the power of the announcement and post a code to give the first 5,10, or 50 customers. Make it an event.

In Summary – Twitter is about being social

Twitter is one of those applications that are contagious… Think instant messaging of the future. Twitter gives you the power to send a message to just one person, or thousands. It’s your choice. The sooner you harness it and begin building up follower lists – the sooner you will start to see your business grow!
